Sunday 31 January, day 7 of week 8
It’s been very quiet on the training front this week – I have had to take some unplanned time out from training. I have not done any training since last Sunday when I ran 11km on the treadmill (and managed a new 10km PB). It’s been a long slow week and I am looking forward to resuming my training in a couple of days.
Yesterday, I watched my running club friends at the South England Athletics Cross Country Championships at Parliament Hill on the Heath. Anyone who grew up in the UK will be familiar in some way with cross country running and it will come as no surprise that cross country running first started in England. Some people enjoy running in the mud on cold, dark windy days! No, I don’t get it either.
The Heath was very muddy and the weather became incredibly cold and windy just before the senior men’s race started. Luckily for all of us, it didn’t rain! My endeavours were rewarded with a couple drinks in a warm pub… even if it took us a while to walk there.
The closest I will get to running in muddy hills is the trail of 2 Lux half marathon (semi-marathon des 2 Luxembourg) in May. I ran it last year and can’t wait to run it again! Trail runs are hilly and muddy but are not as difficult and much more scenic. If I had a choice, I would opt for trail races over road running every time.
What about you? Do you prefer cross country or trail running?
